Today I read a novel named Iris on Rainy Days (雨の日のアイリス / Ame no Hi no Iris), by Takeshi Matsuyama. The setting is the distant future where robots are commonplace. The story centres on a cute female robot named Iris Rain Umbrella who lives with her beloved master, Professor Wendy von Umbrella .
One day, Iris' life is turned upside down. The story focuses on her journey as she comes to terms with the purpose of her existence. This is a story with a central theme of life and rebirth, and what I think is an ethical question about the status of intelligent robots in the future.
I think I'm a sucker for robot girl stories. My current ongoing work might be a good indicator of that :) The story was quite moving and definitely throws some questions out there in regards to the legal rights of robots. Unfortunately I haven't had any time to work on it for these past few months but I definitely won't be abandoning it!
Here's a link to the translated novel if you'd like a read.
